I get a surprised response from a lot of mothers when I explain to them that the best time to photograph their newborn is in the first few days of life. If you want to know the truth, I’d love for everyone to just stop on by on their way home from the hospital!! LOL There are a lot of reasons why photographing your newborn duruing those first 10 days is best and I plan on doing a whole post dedicated to that very topic. But the #1 reason to photograph your baby during the first week is – they are SLEEPY!! Sleepy babies mean I can work my magic, spin my web, cast my spell – more specifically, I can curl them into their womb-like sleepy sweetness that only lasts for a breath of a second.
I recently photographed this sweet baby M who was an old man by my standards (3 weeks old! gasp) But everyone who knows me, knows I never back down from a challenge. Doesn’t mean I can’t still work magic, but WOWZERS this little guy made me work for it!! I tell you, THIS one had a plan all along – and it was to get to MOMMY. When I opened this shot on my screen, I just about fell to the floor with laughter because it totally summed up our day together – cry cry cry cry cry – don’t touch me (especially don’t touch my hands or head) … cry cry cry – mommy comes=happy baby….Do you think he’s mocking me?
CHECK THIS OUT:
I can’t make these things up people….this little guy loves his mama!! So we decided to grant his wish and he got lots of this:
Mostly, though, I got a lot of THIS (read-eyeballs):
It’s okay though. I can be very patient when I have a goal in mind. I waited him out. I mean REALLY waited him out. I (mostly) always get my baby. Isn’t he sweet?? I say we BOTH got points for today. I’m so happy he’s part of my baby plan, beacuse now we can see who gets checkmate at the 6 month session – so excited to watch this little spunky guy grow over the next year. Thanks for a exhaustinglongchallenging fun day P family!

I recently attended a seminar by the amazingly talented Amber Holritz…she’s a photographer based out of Tennessee and her philosophy on family photography was so inspiring and really had me thinking differently about my family sessions. When you think about your favorite portraits of you as a child…which photographs come to mind? Are they the school 8×10′s on your wall from school? Or is it the shot of you and your family laughing, playing, being silly together? One of the points she made was – when your children look back on your family portraits, it’s not just a snapshot of what everyone looked like – it’s a snapshot of HOW they were LOVED. WOW – what a thought…that hit home for me.
How do you love your kids? What are the things you do with them each day – daily routines, rituals, snuggle time….what are those moments in time that a year or two from now will have been forgotten? Well, maybe you won’t forget them. As moms, we tuck those little treasures in that secret place in our hearts. But what about our kids? If we were suddenly gone from their lives, how would they know we loved them? What would they have to hold on to that they can look at and tangibly see our connection?
Many of photographers say that they don’t like family sessions and would rather be a “children only” photographer. I see their point – here’s the scenario – mom has envisioned this beautiful family portrait…ok? She plans for weeks getting outfits together, picking out the perfect location, getting her hair done and making sure everyone is looking their best (not to mention the financial investment put forth). Dad isn’t so “in” to the idea of the portraits. He’s grumpy and angry at the itchy shirt she made him wear. The twin 18-month-olds are running in two separate directions. As dad is wrangling the twins, they realize that 3-year-old Johnny has tried to slide across the floor and there is now a rip in his pants and a scrape on his face…oh and he’s crying. SO, being the magician she is, the photographer gets all 5 together, into position, but the only one smiling at the camera is MOM…Dad is angry and the twins are trying to run away and the 3-year-old has puffy red eyes from his tumble across the floor. OK – this is worst case scnenario, I know…but, hey, it happens. However, I’m feeling much differently about this imaginary mom and her 3 little babies. Being a mom myself, I’ve seen first hand how QUICKLY those screaming babies become 10-year-olds with friends and sleepovers and are too big for my lap. My ”baby” doesn’t like princesses anymore and doesn’t believe in the tooth fairy. It’s gone. All those moments with her – I can’t go back even for one second and have her on my lap – or screaming and running away from me for that matter! I wish SO MUCH I had shots of us playing together – shots of us lounging in bed reading fairy tales. I don’t have them. I never *thought* of it back then! I spent too much time worrying about what I looked like or just not wanting to let go of the control of the camera…also, being the one in control of the camera ensures you’re not in the photographs! Looking back, that’s a huge regret for me. Sure I have lovely portraits of her – and there is DEFINITELY a place for beautiful portraiture of your child – that is my passion, and it always will be.
I am really seeing a new way to look at family sessions. A way of capturing the love and connections between family members…capturing their unique essence. It’s not about posing or I should say it’s not *always* about the perfectly posed portrait with matching outfits, everyone smiling and looking at the camera. I will never go away from my brightly colored child and family portraiture – but I really love the idea of offering sessions like the one you’re about to see as an alternative…or maybe mixing them up together in a way…I’m still working out all of the details. One thing that DOESN”T need to be worked out though – I absolutely love these results!! I hope you do too.
With that, I recently had the honor of photographing the L family for this “new style” of family session. I have to say this was SUCH a breath of fresh air for me – so much fun to capture them together in their element. I arrived while the girls were waiting for daddy to get home from work. We shot some playtime with mom, dad arriving home, dinner time, bath time and family snuggle/reading time before bed. Just a snippet in time of this family’s daily routine. I really enjoyed shooting these moments – I loved putting them together and the final product is JUST what I was hoping to achieve. “L” family, I hope you love these images as much as I do! I’ve put together a video of our evening together and added a few of my favorite images below. I hope you enjoy!!
Here are some of my absolute favorites from our session - how fun???!?!!
Isn’t t his baby SUCH a doll??? My absolute favorite…
So finally after a couple of grueling weeks, the new website and blog are liiiiiiiiiiiiive!!! So finally after a couple of grueling weeks, the new website and blog are liiiiiiiiiiiiive!!! I have to say, I really had no idea what an undertaking changing my name, website and everything would be – I’d forgotten all the details! We finally launched WildSugar’s new website 2 weeks ago – but I held off on announcing it because for some reason, the blog didn’t transfer correctly! After going rounds with our hosting company, with WordPress, with other experts trying to help us figure out why WordPress wouldn’t let me into my control panel (but nobody knowing WHY we were locked out of the blog), I seriously thought I was about to lose my mind!! I could bore you with all the details of what went wrong …hmmmm……well really I can’t bore you with the details because I have ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA what Dave did to fix it – I’m just sooo very happy and thankful that it is!! (Haven’t I mentioned before I couldn’t do this without him?!?!)
So one last issue is for some reason everything is loading slowly – my background paper comes in basically when it feels like it … obviously some gliches to work out yet – but I’m happy!!
After all of THAT — welcome to the new WildSugar Photography blog!!! With a new fresh blog, new look, new name, I was thinking it’s kind of like New Years and I should make a resolution that I’m going to be a better blogger. Should I even say that?? Kinda the kiss of death when you make resolutions and by the 7th you’re like – ehh… forget that. No really – I WANT to be a better blogger, I really do. So I’ve made a list. I have a list of topics on photography, on life, things about the kids, things about my WONDERFUL AWESOME FANTASTIC clients…. I’m gonna do it!! I can feel the change in the air.
Ok done with the technical stuff – now on to the fun stuff. I’ve been absolutely chomping at the BIT to share one of my recent newborns with you…. We weren’t sure this session was destined to happen at first – I got to the house that was FILLED to the brim with the most gorgeous light you’ve ever seen…mom fed baby, we did a few mommy/baby pics – and it was like the apocalypse – I’m not kidding. As we looked out the 20 foot glass windows in the back of her house, we could see these black clouds come rolling in – stealing my beautiful light with every second. And wouldn’t you know it?? Little baby B had jusssssssssssttttt fallen into a nice, deep dreamy sleep. Watcha gonna do? I think it was meant to be because when I returned for the sunrise light a couple of mornings later, it was absolutely glorious lighting and I’m just so pleased and excited about these beautiful images.
Can you believe the gigantic blue eyes on this sweet little one??? He looks just like his gorgeous mama!
How cute is that little tushie in the air!??!
Now I must warn you – serious gorgeousness ahead — both inside and out…
This last one just took my breath away…little B was just a little fussy – we put him on mama’s shoulders and he transformed to an instant calm…I love that about being a mom….you get to be that magical, mystical person who just with a touch can make everything all bettter…
So cozy with mama…
I have so much to share!!!! It’s been busy around here. Till later!!!

I had to share my new favorite photo – I know I say that a lot….I guess I should say my “newest” favorite. There’s always that *one*. That photograph that when I first open it I go “ahhhh!! I LOVE that!!” I then proceed to process it ten thousand different ways and keep it open [...]
I had to share my new favorite photo – I know I say that a lot….I guess I should say my “newest” favorite. There’s always that *one*. That photograph that when I first open it I go “ahhhh!! I LOVE that!!” I then proceed to process it ten thousand different ways and keep it open on my desktop to admire - the one I can’t WAIT for mom and dad to see (and secretly hope they love it as much as I do). This was one of those photographs. This one really speaks to me. Tells the story of childhood – the simplicty of being a kid, summers being long and fun, popsicles, sprinklers, playing with friends, just sittin’ on the dock kicking her little feet in the water. Doesn’t it just give you a peaceful feeling?
That’s it for now! Can’t wait to share the rest of your gallery with you guys!!

As you can see, little man “J” had a blast jumping on the bed – I laughed out loud when I first saw that image – little boy jumping on the bed and mom, dad and baby sister laughing in the background – PERFECT! A new favorite…. Here’s a little composite I did of my favorite shots from this session..
Here’s a couple more of sweet baby O and little J – he and I became quick buddies…I love this little boy age with all the cars! He was just TOO TOO sweet too.
Don’t these children have the most gorgeous eyes!???!
I’ll see you guys soon with your beautiful portraits! I can’t wait to see them printed!
